How to Manually Download and Install MIUI 8 Right Now

Highlights Few Xiaomi devices are eligible for an OTA update Other compatible devices can manually flash their devices to MIUI 8 The China Stable ROM will be made available in a few days

Xiaomi has started rolling out the MIUI 8 Global Stable ROM to all eligible devices. Initially, MIUI 8 Global Stable ROM over-the-air (OTA) update is restricted to only a few devices, which means that the others will have to manually download and install the build if they wish to use it immediately.

Xiaomi Redmi 1S, Mi 2, Mi 2S, Mi 4i, Redmi Note 3G, and Redmi Note 4G will receive the MIUI 8 via an OTA update starting Tuesday, and all they need to do is wait it out patiently for a notification. They can alternatively even check in their Updater app, to see if the update has arrived or not.

For the Redmi 2 and Redmi Note 2, Xiaomi says some users will receive the update from Tuesday, but the rest will start receiving it from Thursday.

For the rest of the devices, Xiaomi has promised the update rollout sometime in the ‘near future,’ which is very vague. The devices with no immediate update are Redmi 2, Redmi 2 Prime, Redmi Note 3 Qualcomm, Redmi Note 3 Special Edition, , Redmi Note Prime, Redmi 3, Redmi 3S, Redmi 3S Prime, Mi 2S, Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi 5, Mi Note, and Mi Max 32GB. No ROM download links are available for these devices either.

For those who have the Redmi 1S, Mi 2, Mi 2S, Mi 4i, Redmi Note 3G, and Redmi Note 4G however, they can download and install the corresponding ROMs from Xiaomi’s website. Follow the below highlighted steps on how to download and install the MIUI 8 Global Stable ROM. However, ensure that you have backed up your files before proceeding.

    1) First step is to identify your smartphone and download the corresponding MIUI 8 build for your smartphone. For all the smartphones that have locked bootloaders, they need to be first unlocked. Follow the steps here. There are two methods of manually downloading – the Recovery Method and the Fastbooting Method. If Fastbooting, then you need to download the Mi Flash Tool from here.

    Mi 2 / Mi 2S – Recovery ROM

    Mi 2 / Mi 2S – Fastboot ROM

    Redmi 1S – Recovery ROM

    Redmi 1S – Fastboot ROM

    Mi 4i – Recovery ROM

    Mi 4i – Fastboot ROM

Redmi Note 4G – Recovery ROM

Redmi Note 4G – Fastboot ROM

Redmi Note 3G – Recovery ROM

    Redmi 2 – Recovery ROM

    Redmi 2 – Fastboot ROM

Redmi Note 2 – Recovery ROM

Redmi Note 2 – Fastboot ROM

    Mi 5 – Recovery ROM

    Mi 5 – Fastboot ROM

Redmi Note Prime – Recovery ROM

Redmi Note Prime – Fastboot ROM

Redmi Note 3 Qualcomm – Recovery ROM

Redmi Note 3 Qualcomm – Fastboot ROM

This list will be updated with new MIUI 8 Global Stable ROM links as Xiaomi makes them available.

Most users should download the Recovery ROM for their smartphone. Flashing Recovery ROM will not wipe your user data or the files in internal storage and it’s simple to use, so unless you are planning to start afresh we suggest you follow this method. In both cases however, just in case something goes wrong, it is always recommended to back up your data and files first, like we mentioned earlier.

    2) Once you’ve downloaded the MIUI 8 Recovery ROM, rename the downloaded ROM file to update.zip on the computer.

    3) Connect your Xiaomi smartphone to your laptop via a Micro-USB cable, and copy the ROM file downloaded into the root directory of the internal storage of your device (do not put it in any other folder).

    4) Enter the Recovery mode of your device. There are 2 methods to do it as follows:

Method 1: Launch Updater app on your device, click the menu icon at the top-right corner, and select Reboot to Recovery mode to enter.

Method 2: You can also turn off your device and then hold both Volume

Android Nougat: How to Download and Install Right Now

Highlights Android 7.0 is rolling out to Nexus devices It can be downloaded via an OTA update Alternatively you can get it via a beta program

Android Nougat is rolling out to Nexus devices via an OTA update. You’ll get this update soon if you have any of the following devices: Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, General Mobile GM 4G, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, or Pixel C.

The simplest way to get the update is to wait for it to show up on your phone, or check for the OTA update manually:

How to download Android 7.0 Nougat via OTA update
Over-the-air (OTA) updates are the easiest way to download Android 7.0 Nougat. Follow these steps to check if you’ve received the update.

Open Settings > About > System updates. Tap Check for updates.

If the update shows up here, you can download and install Android Nougat on your Nexus device. If it hasn’t showed up, you should ideally wait until it does. If you don’t want to wait, read on.

(Also see: Android 7.0 Nougat Is Here: 8 New Features You Need to Know About)

How to download Android 7.0 Nougat via Android Beta Program
If the OTA update hasn’t appeared yet, you can try installing Android 7.0 Nougat via the beta program. The release build is available for some devices such as the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 9 (Wi-Fi), and Pixel C via this method.

We strongly recommend that you back up your Android device before attempting an update. For devices that don’t have the release build, this method will install a preview version and you could lose data and apps could stop working properly.

Visit g.co/androidbeta on your desktop or mobile browser. Sign into your Google account associated with your eligible Nexus device. Scroll down and tap Enrol Device. Once you’re enrolled, go to Settings > About > System updates. Now you’ll see details about the update including a build name in the second line. This appears in brackets after Android N. The release build name is NRD90M for Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Pixel C, and Nexus 9 (Wi-Fi). If the build name on your device starts with NP, it’s a preview build, and we suggest you don’t install it. To remove your device from the beta program, go to http://g.co/androidbeta, sign in and tap Unenrol Device. If you’ve updated to a release build of Android 7.0 Nougat, unenrolling your device will not remove the update.

How to manually download and install Android 7.0 Nougat
The beta program is the simplest way of getting the Android Nougat right now, but if you don’t want to do that for some reason, you can try another way. We don’t recommend installing Android 7.0 Nougat using this method and flashing is a process that could wipe your data if something goes wrong. Be sure to take a full backup of all your data and proceed at your own risk, if you must:

Install the latest Android Debug Bridge (ADB) tool on your PC. This installs the ADB program, which can be accessed through the command terminal on your PC. Add the folder where you’ve installed ADB to the PATH by following these steps: Right click My Computer and click on Properties. Click on Advanced System Settings. Click on System Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables. In the window, select Path, then click on Edit, and then type in the name of the directory where you installed the SDK, and remember that each entry is separated by a semi-colon. Enable USB debugging on your device. First, go to Settings > About Phone > Software information. Tap Build number seven times. Go to Settings > Developer options. Tick USB debugging. Download the correct OTA binary for your device:
    Nexus 6P
    Nexus 5X
    Pixel C
    Nexus 9 (Wi-Fi)
    Nexus Player
Links for other devices were not available at the time of writing; we will update the post as and when more links become available. Connect your device to your computer over USB, and make sure USB debugging is enabled as described above. Via the ADB tool, go to the command terminal and execute the following: adb reboot recovery. Your device is now in recovery mode, and users will see an Android logo with a red exclamation on their display. Hold the power button and press the volume up key once, and you will be shown a menu. Within the menu, select Apply update from ADB. Remember, volume keys help you navigate up and down, while the power button makes a selection. Run the following command on the ADB tool via your PC: adb sideload (ota file.zip). Do replace the ‘ota file.zip’ in the command with the actual name of the OTA file you have downloaded. Once the update finishes installing, users should choose the option Reboot system now.

That will install Android 7.0 Nougat on your Nexus device. For more tutorials, visit our How To section.

Highlights Twitter has increased the 140-character limit to 280 This feature is not available for all users Using this guide you can enable it now

Twitter has always been about brevity, but the company appears to be loosening its strict 140-character limit for every tweet. As an experimental feature the company has allowed some people to use up to 280 characters per tweet. Like every major change to products lots of people use, this one has proved to be polarising. Some people love it while others just don’t. No matter which side of the debate you are on, you can try the feature for yourself and decide whether you like it. If Twitter has enabled it on your account, fantastic. If not, these steps will help you double the character count of each of your tweets.

How to tweet 280 characters on Twitter.com

If you are on Google Chrome, follow these steps:

Open Tweetdeck and sign in with your Twitter account. Click View > Developer > Developer tools Click the Sources tab. Now click on the > button and select Snippets. Click New Snippet. Now go to this Github page and copy the code you see there. Alternatively you can copy it right here:TD.services.TwitterClient.prototype.makeTwitterCall

The Best Portable SSD You Can Buy in India Right Now

The Samsung SSD T5 offers better speed, reliability, and portability than hard drives Highlights Portable SSDs are expensive but are much more convenient than hard drives Many brands best known for hard drives have entered the SSD market Not all SSDs offer encryption for security or an IP rating for ruggedness

We’ve seen solid-state drives (SSDs) replacing hard drives (HDDs) in PCs and laptops, but they aren’t always ideal for everyone. While flash memory chips are a lot faster than spinning platters, you can’t get anywhere near the same amount of storage space at the same prices. Some people are willing to make the tradeoff, but for power users, a combination of both is ideal.

The same holds true for external storage. While many people, especially laptop users, now own at least one portable hard drive, the same cannot be said for SSDs. A 500GB SSD could cost as much as a 4TB hard drive, making them niche products. Most people who only need to copy files now and then can just use a simple USB pen drive. You have to know exactly what your needs are in terms of speed, reliability, and capacity.

Portable SSDs are a relatively new product category, but there are still multiple different types, brands, and models in the market. We’ve scanned multiple online and offline retailers to get an idea of the current market scenario, and combined that with our experience with these products to bring you this shortlist.

The best portable SSD in India

Our pick is the Samsung SSD T5, which impressed us with its speed when we reviewed it earlier this year. Samsung is one of the world’s biggest flash memory producers and suppliers, and this is its third-generation product following the SSD T1 and SSD T3. Availability is consistent, and the device is fairly pocketable. You get 256-bit AES and up to 2TB of space.

In our test, the Samsung SSD T5 managed 551.9MBps sequential reads and 499.9MBps sequential writes. The 250GB and 500GB versions are likely to be the most popular, with street prices as low as Rs. 7,000 and Rs. 8,500 respectively, and they go on sale frequently.

The 1TB model will set you back by around Rs. 17,000 and the 2TB model is listed with a small number of retailers starting at around Rs. 34,000. Bear in mind that these prices fluctuate quite a lot, and you can get good deals through some online retailers.

      The upgrade alternatives

If you use a high-end laptop or desktop with Thunderbolt 3 ports, you might want to consider an external storage device such as the Samsung SSD X5, which boasts of read and write speeds of up to 2800MBps and 2300MBps respectively. It will help you get your work done faster, and will be compatible with any PC with a USB Type-C port, though of course at much lower speeds.

The Samsung SSD X5 has been launched in India but isn’t very widely available. Samsung’s official prices are Rs. 27,999 for the 500GB model, Rs. 48,999 for 1TB, and an eyebrow-raising Rs 97,999 for the top-end 2TB version. We’ve seen the 500GB version selling for around Rs. 20,000 online.

If speed isn’t your top concern, the G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series has a large, heavy body made of solid aluminium which acts as a heatsink and makes the device quite rugged. It’s designed to be noticed, but still has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance and has been designed to withstand all kinds of abuse including being crushed and dropped. You also get a five-year warranty.

In our tests, this portable SSD managed sequential read and write speeds of 562.2MBps and 514.8MBps, which are pretty impressive figures. This drive promises USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps) speed and comes preformatted for Macs, though it can be used with any kind of computer. It is fairly expensive though, with the 500GB version retailing for Rs. 11,999, the 1TB model for Rs. 27,499, and the 2TB model priced at Rs. 54,699.

How to Play Red Dead Redemption on the Xbox One Right Now

While game developer Rockstar is known for the Grand Theft Auto series, it broke new ground with 2010’s open-world Wild West epic Red Dead Redemption. It was exclusive to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Ever since Microsoft announced backwards compatibility for the Xbox One, the game has been one of the community’s most requested Xbox 360 titles to be playable on the Redmond-based company’s newest console.

Although Microsoft is yet to officially announce it’s availability, you can play it on the Xbox One right now. This was discovered by users of popular gaming forum NeoGAF who spotted it playable. Presumably being checked by a tester soon before a public announcement. You can play Red Dead Redemption on your Xbox One right now too. Here’s how.

(Also see: You Can Now Also Play These 16 Xbox 360 Games on Your Xbox One)

Find someone following Red Dead Redemption. With the New Xbox One Experience, players can follow specific games for direct updates. Simply look up an Xbox One user on your console and check his or her followed games.

On doing so, you can download the game from the Red Dead Redemption page on the Xbox One if you already own it digitally.

If you don’t own it digitally, you can buy it from the Xbox website for Rs. 1,499 and proceed to download it from the Red Dead Redemption page on the Xbox One.

(Also see: New Xbox One Experience: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly)

If you own it on disc, fret not. Microsoft should allow you to play it shortly.

And Red Dead Redemption isn’t the only game. Others such as Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night are playable as well in the same fashion. What this points to is an inevitable announcement from Microsoft of the availability of these Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One via backwards compatibility.

Would you be revisiting the world of Red Dead Redemption or are you more interested in newer games playable on the Xbox One? Let us know via the comments.

Four USB Type-C Accessories You Can Buy For Your MacBook Right Now

Nearly three years after the the reversible connector made an appearance on a mainstream device, and two and a half years since USB Type-C was first seen on laptops and smartphones, it’s still incredibly hard to find Type-C accessories. For most people, this is not a problem – if you have a smartphone with a Type-C port but no headphone jack, the manufacturer likely bundled a Type-C to 3.5mm adapter and/ or Type-C earphones in the box. If the Type-C port is used only for data transfer and charging, you probably won’t even notice the difference.

But if you have a laptop with a USB Type-C port – and especially a machine with only Type-C port(s) like the Retina MacBook and MacBook Pro (2016 and newer) – then life can be pretty different. First, you have to deal with the transition from Type-A (

Mark Cuban: Apple ‘did the exact right thing’

    Thursday, 18 Feb 2016 | 9:28 AM ETCNBC.com

Mark Cuban weighed in on Thursday on the Apple versus FBI debate, applauding the tech giant for resisting a federal court order to unlock a terrorist’s iPhone.

In a blog post, the Dallas Mavericks’ owner said Tim Cook did the “exact right thing by not complying with the order.”

“Every tool that protects our privacy and liberties against oppression, tyranny, madmen and worse can often be used to take those very precious rights from us,” Cuban wrote. “We must stand up for our rights to free speech and liberty.”

The government is pinning its order on the All Writs Act of 1789, which Cuban calls a “catch all for anything for which there is no law.” He suggests that a better way to deal with the situation at hand is to pass new legislation to deal with the issue.

“The issue is that as often happens, technology speeds past our ability to adapt or create new laws that match the onslaught of daily technological change,” said Cuban.

He added that he’s normally in favor of fewer laws, but in this case, new legislation is essential to prevent the “slippery slope of privacy violations hidden behind the All Writs Act.”

A federal magistrate on Tuesday ordered Apple to assist in the San Bernardino terror attack investigation by designing a new operating system to disable the feature that erases all contents after 10 failed passcode attempts. This would allow the FBI to unlock the iPhone 5C used by Syed Rizwan Farook, who with his wife killed 14 people on Dec. 2.

The phone is owned by Farook’s former employer, the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health. The department has supported federal investigators’ requests to search the contents of the device.

On Wednesday, Cook said Apple would oppose the order. “The implications of the government’s demands are chilling,” he said in a note to customers. “If the government can use the All Writs Act to make it easier to unlock your iPhone, it would have the power to reach into anyone’s device to capture their data.”

In his blog post, Cuban drew a link between encryption and the protection of free speech.

“Speech can only be free when it is protected,” he said. “We have a right to protect our speech from those, domestic or otherwise, who may watch or monitor us. Which is why encryption is vitally important to all of us.”

He added that encryption is incredibly easy and compared it to wearing a seatbelt in your car.

Cuban suggested new legislation that compels a company to remove security or encryption from mobile devices in only four specific circumstances:

An event, with casualties, that has been declared an act of terrorismThere is reason to believe that the smartphone was possessed by a participant in the act of terrorism. The smartphone must have been on premise during the event. The terrorist who was in possession of the smartphone or tablet must be deceased.

The goal of such legislation would be to remove the All Writs Act from this situation and limit the government’s ability to pressure companies to decrypt their own security software.

Cuban acknowledged the difficulty of balancing the need to protect privacy while drafting a law that would potentially reduce those protections.

Who is right: Apple or the government?

    Wednesday, 17 Feb 2016 | 7:17 AM ETCNBC.com

FBI released photos of the San Bernardino mass shooters Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik. FBI released photos of the San Bernardino mass shooters Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik.

On Tuesday, a U.S. magistrate ordered Apple to help the Federal Bureau of Investigation hack into an iPhone belonging to one of the shooters in San Bernardino, California.

In response, Apple chief executive Tim Cook called the order is “chilling” and said it is essentially asking the U.S. tech giant to “hack” its own users.

In a letter to customers on Wednesday, Cook said that he opposes the court order, explaining that the move is “dangerous.”

Why Apple is right to fight FBI: ex-Apple security

Rick Orloff, former Apple security chief Monday, 22 Feb 2016 | 12:00 PM ETCNBC.com

The U.S. Department of Justice’s motion issued last week to compel Apple to create a bypass of its iPhone data self-destruct feature is understandable. The FBI wants to access data stored on an encrypted iPhone owned by Syed Farook, who, with his wife, killed 14 people in San Bernardino last December.

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook wrote a public letter to customers, calling the order a dangerous precedent.

However, when we examine the implications of having Apple and other companies build “backdoors” into their products that enable law enforcement authorities to access encrypted data on endpoint devices, we soon find that building such backdoors actually creates more problems than it solves.

    Apple CEO Tim Cook.

It could lead to putting these backdoors into everyone’s smart phone, PC or other computing device, creating a whole new attack vector for hackers to exploit. Hackers and hostile foreign countries will see this as an opportunity to use this vulnerability to their benefit.

If these backdoors are built, it will be a question of when, not if, a hacker will create his own exploit and use it to get his hands on an enterprise’s, person’s or government agency’s data.

In addition, if we start down the slippery slope of including backdoors in our computing devices, then sophisticated terrorists and other criminals will pursue alternative security solutions. Rather than depend on an endpoint’s built-in encryption and other security features, they will add off-the-shelf security tools to protect their data.

The Department of Justice will end up finding itself playing a game of “whack-a-mole,” working to compel every third-party encryption vendor within its jurisdiction to build backdoors into its products. Yet even if the government finds a way to win this game it will still lose.

Sooner or later, companies located in countries beyond the U.S. Department of Justice’s legal jurisdiction will develop and sell their own encryption tools – companies that the U.S. Department of Justice will be unable to compel to install backdoors.

Meanwhile, the negative impact of creating these backdoors in hardware and software products is significant. Corporations and individuals will no longer trust that the data they save on their smart phones, PCs and other computing devices is safe – unless they add complex and expensive third-party encryption tools to these devices themselves.

Also, computing device manufacturers would likely need to create whole new teams to manage the hundreds to thousands of unlock requests they are likely to get from not just the federal government, but state, local, and foreign governments as well.

Moreover, creating backdoors to access encrypted data on endpoint devices is not a silver bullet that will win the war on terrorism. If law enforcement agencies have a suspect in their sights, there are many tools, processes and capabilities they can leverage to gather data that will further their investigations. Trying to decrypt data on an endpoint, while very valuable, isn’t the only option.

In the end, if we force companies to build backdoors that the government can use to access encrypted data we wind up making our security problem worse, not better. Terrorists and criminals will continue to use other tools to secure or encrypt their data.

Corporations, governments, and individuals will need to add yet another piece of software to their technology stack to mitigate a known backdoor. If they don’t, and they are compromised, government leaders and executives will ask the security team, “If you knew about the vulnerability, why didn’t you protect us from it?”

I believe we all want to prevent terrorism. But in doing so, we should not weaken the security posture of the internet, and only make ourselves less safe, not more.
