How to Use Your Laptop as a Wi-Fi Hotspot

Have you ever been in a situation where you have no W-Fi router, just one network cable and five people who need to use the Internet? Or maybe you have a 3G dongle that works with your laptop, but leaves your Wi-Fi-only tablet offline. Sounds familiar? It would certainly be handy to share the Internet connection amongst all users and devices without a router, right?

Or maybe this scenario will ring a bell. Many hotels offer wired Internet access for free, but charge you for Wi-Fi and/ or for using the Internet on more than one device. So should you just pay the crazy amount they ask for? Not necessarily.

You can share your laptop or desktop Internet connection via Wi-Fi to other devices, and for the most part, it’s quite simple. Mac users face no trouble at all, as setting up Internet sharing in OS X is just a couple of click away, but for Windows users the process can be a little bit more laboured. The built-in options don’t always cut it due to the complicated setup and reliability problems.

Use Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 Laptops as Wi-Fi Hotspots

Thankfully, there are quite a few apps that let you use your machine as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Before you use any of these apps, you may want to check the steps on Microsoft’s site to see Windows’ built-in Internet sharing and see if you have better luck than we did. We do recommend that you skip that and use a third-party app instead, since the experience is usually much better.

We tested some popular apps that let you do this – Connectify and Virtual Router Plus. The latter didn’t work very well for us. Our anti-virus flagged it as a threat and during installation it tried to make us install unwanted software.

We didn’t have the same issues with Connectify. It is a reliable app for turning your computer into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Before you proceed, know that you will need a Windows PC with a Wi-Fi adapter (or built-in Wi-Fi) to make this work. If your computer does not have Wi-Fi, then you can buy one that connects via USB, such as this one.

Here are the steps to setup your Windows machine as a Wi-Fi hotspot:

Download Connectify and install it. The installation is pretty straightforward and when installation is complete, restart your computer. After restarting the computer, check whether it is connected to the Internet. If it is, run the Connectify Hotspot app. You’ll see two tabs in the app – Settings and Clients. In the Settings tab, under “Create a…” click Wi-Fi Hotspot. Under Internet to Share, you’ll see a drop-down menu. Expand it and select the connection you want to share. We tested this app with a wired and a wireless connection and found that it worked perfectly with both. Under that, you’ll see some more options. Add a Wi-Fi password. Click Start Hotspot.

That’s all you need to do. Now other devices will detect a Wi-Fi network labelled Connectify-me. Key in the password and you’re good to go.

Lenovo ThinkPad Anniversary Edition 25 Laptop With Retro ThinkPad Design Launched

Highlights The “Retro ThinkPad” has a classic 7-row keyboard and ThinkPad logo It’s based on the ThinkPad T470 and has modern-day specifications The first ThinkPad model was launched on October 5, 1992

Lenovo is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the ThinkPad line of business-minded laptops by releasing a retro special edition that borrows a lot of design cues from the original model. First teased in a series of blog posts two years ago, the new ThinkPad Anniversary Edition 25 – or “ThinkPad Retro”, as it was referred to while in development – will be a limited edition release. Its main appeal will be a seven-row keyboard with standard (non-chiclet) keys, dedicated volume buttons and status LEDs, the classic blue Enter key, a multi-coloured ThinkPad logo, and special Anniversary Edition branding and packaging.

In terms of hardware, the device is pretty much the same as the ThinkPad T470 model, which it is based on. There’s an Intel Core i7-7500U CPU, Nvidia GeForce 940MX GPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 14-inch full-HD touchscreen. There’s also Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.2, a Thunderbolt 3 port, stereo speakers and dual mics. Battery life is claimed to be 13.9 hours, and weight is 1.6kg. It will be priced at $1,899 (approximately Rs. 1,23,600).

In a series of blog posts in mid-2015, Lenovo’s Chief Design Officer David Hill explored the idea of bringing back features and design touches that have been dropped over the years, and questioned whether customers preferred laptops the way they used to be 25 years ago compared to now. The four-part survey included detailed questions about preferred screen sizes and aspect ratios, keyboard layouts, backlighting options, the shape of the TrackPoint’s rubber caps, and even the long-debated positioning of the Fn and Ctrl keys on ThinkPads. Each post attracted thousands of comments, through which debates raged about the poor quality of today’s laptops.

In the two years that have passed since then, it seemed as though Lenovo might have abandoned the idea of a retro ThinkPad, but it turns out that many of those insights made it into the Anniversary Edition 25. The original ThinkPad 700C was launched on October 5,1992, and over 130 million units have been sold since. After IBM sold the brand to Lenovo, its new owner has continued to release new models and innovate with designs.

iBall Compbook Marvel 6 Review: Windows 10 Laptop Under Rs. 15,000

Highlights This laptop costs less than Rs. 15,000 but is capable of basic tasks It offers a large screen, full-sized keyboard, and licensed Windows 10 The body flexes and bends easily, and storage is constrained to 32GB

A little over a year ago, we reviewed the iBall Compbook Exemplaire, a 14-inch notebook that cost less than Rs. 15,000. We found it to be underpowered and flimsy, but ultimately worthwhile, because there really isn’t a lot of choice at this price level, and at least you could get basic work done. There still isn’t much choice – and we still feel that there’s a gap in the market where netbooks used to reign. Sure, tablets can be fun to use and easy to watch movies on, but typing, browsing the Web, and multitasking are still largely off the table. iBall was smart enough to take the guts of a tablet and put them into a clamshell with a usable keyboard and screen, without pushing costs up too high.

Now, we have with us the successor to that product, the new iBall Compbook Marvel 6. It looks very similar, but benefits from newer technology. The price is still the same, so we hope that iBall has managed to iron out some of the problems with the Exemplaire and give us a machine that’s even better value for money.

Lenovo Pays $3.5 Million Fine to Settle Superfish Laptop Adware Charges by US FTC

Lenovo, a major laptop maker, has agreed to pay $3.5 million (roughly Rs. 22.4 crores) and make changes in how it sells laptops in order to settle allegations it sold devices with pre-loaded software that compromised users’ security protections.

The agreement with Connecticut, the Federal Trade Commission and 31 other states was announced on Tuesday.

The software, called VisualDiscovery, was installed on hundreds of thousands of laptops beginning in August 2014 in order to deliver pop-up advertisements. The software also blocked browsers from warning users when they tried to access malicious websites.

The software was also able to access consumers’ sensitive information, like Social Security numbers, the FTC said. That information was not sent to Superfish, which sold VisualDiscovery, the FTC said.

“Lenovo compromised consumers’ privacy when it preloaded software that could access consumers’ sensitive information without adequate notice or consent to its use,” Acting FTC Chairman Maureen Ohlhausen said in a statement. “This conduct is even more serious because the software compromised online security protections that consumers rely on.”

Lenovo said in a statement that it stopped selling the pre-loaded software in early 2015.

“While Lenovo disagrees with allegations contained in these complaints, we are pleased to bring this matter to a close after 2-1/2 years,” the company said.

“To date, we are not aware of any actual instances of a third party exploiting the vulnerabilities to gain access to a user’s communications,” the company said in an email statement.

As part of the settlement, Lenovo agreed to get consumers’ consent before installing this type of software, the FTC said.
