How to Switch Off and Turn On iPhone, iPad With a Damaged Power Button

If you’re an iPhone or iPad user, then you might not realise just how much you end up using the power on your phone. The home button is essential to navigate through your device, and the use of the volume buttons and the mute switch on the side is pretty obvious too, but if your power button stops working, you can’t turn your phone off – or back on again for that matter.

It’s also pretty easy to damage, with external factors such as excess humidity or dust that can make it stop working. You can get by without switching off the iOS device, but it is always good to be able to turn the phone off if needed. These simple steps to switch off the device without touching the power button could come in really handy.

(Also see: How to Add Touchscreen Home Button on iPhone, iPad)

    Open Settings.

    Go to General > Accessibility.

Scroll down to the section labelled INTERACTION and tap on AssistiveTouch.

On the next screen, toggle AssistiveTouch to the green On position.

A white circle with a grey box will appear on screen. Tap this circle to expand it to a big box on screen.

    Tap Device.

Tap and hold Lock Screen until the red-and-white power icon appears on screen with the text slide to power off next to it.

Slide the power icon to the right to switch off the iPhone or iPad.

That takes care of switching the device off, but what do you do if you want to turn it back on? If the power button is damaged, how else can you switch on an iOS device? The answer is – charge the device. Yes, just connect it to a power socket or to a USB port on any computer. The device will turn back on in a few seconds. As soon as the white screen with the Apple logo appears, you can disconnect the charger or USB cable.

How to Automatically Delete Old Text Messages on iPhone, Android

Is your smartphone taking too long to load the text messaging app? Has the text message app begun stuttering when you scroll up or down the list of messages? Is your phone’s memory almost full and you need to get rid of some of that digital clutter? If your answer to these questions is yes, then you should consider automatically deleting text messages.

Most of us get far too many text messages to manually delete each one of them. On our first Nokia feature phones, we could only store 100-odd messages in most phones, so we kept a close eye on all incoming messages. Today though, storage restrictions have seemingly vanished and the messages began piling up in everyone’s phones. That led to another set of problems – laggy messaging apps and storage woes. Reducing the clutter is actually pretty simple – you can set your phone to automatically delete old messages. This is how.

    iPhone

On the iPhone, you can set the device to automatically delete all old messages. The only problem is that you can’t make any exceptions – you can’t change a setting that would allow all messages from a particular sender to stay even past the expiry date. If you want to save any information from a message, we suggest keeping a clipping in an app like Evernote. To set up automatically cleaning old messages, this is what you do:

    Open Settings > Messages.

Scroll down to the section labelled MESSAGE HISTORY.

    Tap Keep Messages.

Choose either 30 days or 1 Year. This will delete messages older than one month or one year.

How to Check IMEI Number of Any Android Phone and iPhone

When you’re registering your phone, or trying to sell an old one online, you might be asked for your IMEI number. If you’re drawing a blank and trying desperately to find out what this number is, don’t worry. The IMEI (International Mobile Station Equipment Identity) is a unique number assigned to every mobile phone sold via official channels. This number is very useful if you lose your phone, or if it is stolen. Police usually require you to mention the IMEI number when reporting your phone as stolen and, then, depending upon the local laws, your phone can be blocked from accessing networks or placing calls by blacklisting its IMEI.

Note that an IMEI is associated with a SIM slot, so dual SIM phones will have two IMEI numbers. Similarly, tablets with cellular connectivity will also have a IMEI number.

This makes the number important in emergency situations. And if the device is located, you can use the IMEI number to establish that it is indeed your phone. This is how to find your phone’s IMEI number.

    When you have the phone:

How to Check Phone’s IMEI Number Using USSD code

This is the simplest method of finding your phone’s IMEI number. The good thing about this method is that it is more or less universal. It works on almost all feature phones and smartphones, so try this before you go hunting for the phone’s bill.

How to Download and Install iOS 9 on Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

iOS 9, the latest and greatest version of Apple’s operating system for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, is now available for download. If you’ve been wondering whether your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is eligible for the update, and/ or how you can download iOS 9 on your Apple device, or how to take a backup of all data on your device before you install iOS 9, we have you covered.

(Also see: 15 iOS 9 Features That Make Your iPhone and iPad Better Than Ever)

Will my iOS device get iOS 9?
If your device is running iOS 8, then it is eligible for the iOS 9 upgrade. This year Apple hasn’t discontinued OS upgrade support for any devices, but some features such as split-screen multitasking for iPad will only work on the newest devices. The following iOS devices will get the iOS 9 update. The iPad Pro, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPad mini 4 will ship with iOS 9 pre-installed, and hence don’t appear in this list.

    Backup
While the iOS update process is usually very smooth, it’s still recommended that you take a backup to ensure that your data is safe. Here’s how.

(Also see: How to Take a Complete Backup of Your Old iPhone)

You can do this via iCloud or iTunes, but we recommend that you do it via iTunes, because it doesn’t require an Internet connection. Here are the steps to take a backup of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

    1) Connect your iOS device to a PC or Mac.

    2) Open iTunes.

    3) On the top-left (to the left of My Music), click the icon that represents your iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod touch icon).

    4) Under Backups, you will see the sub-head Manually Back Up and Restore.

    5) Click Back Up Now to start backing up your iOS device.

Once essential data from the default apps has been backed up, iTunes will ask you if you want to transfer purchases. This backs up all apps installed on your phone, along with data downloaded within those apps. To do this, you will have to sign in with your Apple ID.

If you don’t have access to a computer, then you can use iCloud Backup. Only 5GB is free and you’ll have to pay Rs. 60 per month for additional storage on iCloud.

    1) To start backing up, on your iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud > Backup.

    2) Turn on the switch marked iCloud Backup. You’ll get a warning telling you that your iPhone will not back up to your computer automatically. Tap Ok.

    3) Once iCloud Backup is on, tap Back Up Now. This will start backing up your data to iCloud.

Wait for the backup to finish before proceeding further. You should see the Last Backup time (which should appear right below Back Up Now) correspond to something recent once the backup is completed.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus: How to Use Live Photos

If you’re getting one of the new iPhones, you’ll be able to turn still images into video.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which start shipping Friday in the U.S. and other markets, automatically take three-second videos to accompany your regular shots, including selfies.

Imagine snapping a shot of your kid blowing out birthday candles – and getting video showing the flame going out as everyone sings “Happy Birthday.” Yes, sound is included. You can also enhance shots of your pets and landscapes, such as a waterfall.

You need one of the 6s models to capture these “Live Photos,” but older phones are fine for viewing.

This feature takes practice, so check out these tips:

    Taking the shot
When you open the camera app, the iPhone continually records video in the background, though it’s immediately discarded if you do nothing. When you snap a shot, the phone saves a second and a half of video leading to that shot and continues recording until you get three seconds in all.

Use This Cool Trick to Instantly Free Up Space on Your iPhone

Running low on space on your iPhone? Just rent a movie on iTunes and get a few gigabytes of space on the iPhone.

People who are using Apple’s 16GB iPhone variants tend to run out of storage. On this device, a user gets approximately 11GB of user accessible storage as the rest of it is used by Apple’s iOS operating system.

After installing a few apps and storing photos, music and videos, a user normally runs out of storage.

According to a thread on Reddit, there is one crazy trick you can try to reclaim some of the used-up space.

The trick involves renting a movie from iTunes. To see how the trick works, go to Settings > General > About and scroll down to Available.

Check how much storage is left and then head to the iTunes Store.

Search for a film which is bigger than the space left on your phone. For example if the available space is 4GB, choose a movie whose file size is greater than 4GB.

Then click Rent at the top of the page. The user will not be charged as the phone does not have enough space to download it and a message will appear saying You don’t have enough available storage.

After clicking OK, head back to settings and check your available storage again. A significant increase in the available storage space should be visible.

You can repeat the entire process a few times.

“As of now, it’s unclear on how the trick works, but it probably has got to do with some cache and other storage from apps getting cleaned up,” the report said.
